Pet Food Pantry Offers Assistance to Help Keep Pets with Their Families

Posted on Monday March 03, 2025

Following approval of their application, families would be able to receive pet food for up to five animals per month.

The Pet Food Assistance Program will provide Rockingham County residents with emergency pet food assistance in an effort to support keeping pets and their families together. This program is based on the availability of food donations, so it is important that every individual has an appointment for these requests to ensure we can meet their needs.

Eligibility for participation in the program is as follows:

  • Must reside in Rockingham County
  • Food distribution is limited to 5 pets per household (same address / same residence).
  • The limit is one food request appointment per month, per residence.
  • All pets in the household must be up-to-date on rabies vaccinations, as required by North Carolina law (NCGS 130A-185), which mandates rabies vaccination for all dogs and cats by four months of age. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter offers 1-year rabies vaccines for $10 for those without a valid certificate from a veterinarian. Proof of vaccination is required before the first food pickup appointment.

All clients who request assistance with pet food must have an appointment scheduled. Clients come to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter to receive the application to enroll. Individuals that are homebound are encouraged to call the shelter for assistance with filling out the application and setting up a designated person to pick up food.

We would like to send our appreciation to Lopez Dorada who held a fundraiser to donate food for us to fill the pantry and stock up on food for our shelter animals. They were able to donate over 3,000lb. of food!

We would also like to thank Rocky & The Bark Bunch Rescue who are committing to volunteer to help organize, distribute and review applications for the pantry.

Applications for the program are now available for pick up at the shelter. Valid proof of address is required. Please allow 48 hours for staff to review your application and set up a designated pick up time.

Applications will collect the following information; the clients name, address, contact information and a copy of a valid photo ID. The application has space to list up to 5 pets, including the name, species, size, altered status, and rabies vaccination.
