What is the difference between a Certified and Uncertified Copy?

 Certified Copy

• Printed on security paper with a statement certifying the record is a trust copy/abstract of the original document
• Signature and raised seal of a Deputy, Assistant, or the Register of Deeds
• Often used for most legal or official purposes (ex: starting school, passport applications, obtaining DMV ID)

 Uncertified Copy

• Printed on a plain sheet of paper
• No signature or seal from the Register of Deeds office
• Often used for personal records or informational purposes (genealogy)

• Copy of your government-issued photo ID, such as a Driver's License or state-issued ID, as proof of identification (Agents, attorneys, or legal representatives must furnish documentation of authority and identification as well as photo ID)

• Self-addressed stamped envelope
