Rockingham County Board of Elections
The Board of Elections is the agency charged at the local level with responsibility for administering
fair, accurate, honest, and impartial elections in Rockingham County.
Candidate filing for the 2025 Municipal Elections will begin on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. and end on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
***Voters
will now be asked to present a valid photo identification when voting in
person. If you do not have a valid photo ID card, you may obtain one from your
county board of elections prior to the election, through the end of the early
voting period.
If you do not have a valid photo
ID card on Election Day, you may still vote and have your vote counted by
signing an affidavit of reasonable impediment (or “Photo ID Exception Form”) as
to why you have not presented a valid photo ID. The Exception Form can be used if you have a religious objection to
being photographed or are a victim of a recently declared natural disaster.
As an
alternative, if you don’t have your ID when you vote, you can still vote and
then bring your valid photo ID to your county board of elections by 5 p.m. on
the third day after Election Day.
If you
vote by mail, then you must include a photocopy of a valid photo ID when
returning your ballot. You may also
complete the Absentee Photo ID Exception Form that is provided with your
absentee ballot materials.
A list
of all types of ID that can be used for voting is available on the State Board
of Elections Voter ID webpage. For information on how to get a free ID, see Get a Free Voter Photo ID.***
Online Voter Registration through the DMV
Online Voter Registration
You
may apply to register to vote online. Click the button to
complete an application for new voter registration or to update your
address or party affiliation. Updated information will only apply to
your voter registration.
Please note: There
is no fee to apply for voter registration through the PayIt online
service and you do not need to create an account with PayIt. Select
“Continue as a guest” to bypass creating an account.
Once the online application is complete, it is sent to the N.C. State Board of Elections, which handles voter registrations.
If
there are any issues with the application or if more information is
needed, your county board of elections will contact you to complete the
process. Voter registration applications submitted fewer than 25 days
before an election will not be processed until after the election. You
may still register to vote in person using same-day registration in your
county during the early voting period.
This service is offered through a partnership between the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles and the N.C. State Board of Elections.
Voters are required to show photo ID.
