Provisional Voting

A Provisional Ballot is a ballot issued to a voter who is not eligible to vote a regular ballot.

Reasons a Voter would vote a Provisional Ballot

  • Incorrect party (Primary Elections)
  • Incorrect precinct (Election Day)
  • Jurisdiction dispute
  • No acceptable ID (For first time voters who did not provide ID information when they registered to vote)
  • No record of registration
  • Previously removed
  • Unrecognized address
  • Unreported move
  • Voter already voted
  • Voting during extended hours (if ordered by state board due to a late opening or interruption in voting)

Voters voting a provisional ballot will complete a provisional voting application, then place and seal their voted provisional ballot into the provisional ballot envelope.

Provisional ballot envelopes (containing the voted provisional ballots) are sent to the Board of Elections.

The information provided on the forms with the provisional ballot envelopes is thoroughly researched by the Board of Elections.

If eligible, the provisional ballot will be counted.
