Municipal Elections

What is a Municipal Election?

A Municipal Election is a non-partisan Election held every two years in odd-numbered years to elect members of a municipality's governing bodies. There are 6 municipalities whose boundaries lie within Rockingham County: Eden, Madison, Mayodan, Reidsville, Stoneville, and Wentworth.

City of Eden

  • Nonpartisan Plurality
  • Mayor – 4 Year Terms (Next Election: 2025)
  • City Council – 7 Members (1 Member per Ward – 7 Wards) 
  • City Council – 4 Year Terms – Staggered (Next Election: 2025 - Ward 3,4,5) (Next Election: 2027 - Ward 1,2,6,7)
  • Candidates must live in ward to run
  • Voted on at large (Must live in city limits)

City of Reidsville

  • Nonpartisan with Runoff (Mayor Only) (Mayor must meet 40% vote total to win – If not, runoff of top 2)
  • Mayor – 4 Year Terms (Next Election: 2025)
  • Councilmen – 6 Members (2 At Large, 2 District A, 2 District B)
  • Councilmen (Districts) – 4 Year Terms (Next Election: 2027 – 2 Seats District A, 2 Seats District B)
  • Councilmen (At Large) - 4 Year Terms (Next Election: 2025)
  • Candidates run at large (2 At Large Seats) (Must live in city limits)
  • Voted on at large (2 At Large Seats) (Must live in city limits)
  • Candidates must live in district to run (2 District A Seats, 2 District B Seats)
  • Voters must live in District to vote (2 District A Seats, 2 District B Seats)

Town of Madison

  • Nonpartisan Plurality
  • Mayor – 2 Year Terms (Next Election: 2025)
  • Alderman – 6 Members
  • Alderman – 4 Year Terms – Staggered (Next Election: 2025 – 3 Seats) (Next Election: 2027 – 3 Seats)
  • Candidates run at large (Must live in town limits)
  • Voted on at large (Must live in town limits)

  • Candidates run at large (Must live in town limits)
  • Voted on at large (Must live in town limits)

In Municipal Elections

  • Absentee Voting by Mail begins 30 days prior to the Election
  • Candidate order is alphabetical by last name
  • Canvass is 10 days after the Election
  • Observers are not allowed
  • Elections are nonpartisan
  • Recounts are allowed
  • Residency deadline is 30 days prior to Election
  • Runners are not allowed
  • Runoffs are not allowed (Except for Reidsville Mayor)
  • Write Ins are allowed
