Helpful Tips
- It’s VERY important that you contact and visit all area shelters and include surrounding Counties in your search for your missing pet. Animals can wander far from home, or be picked up by a concerned citizen from another community who is visiting or working in your community. If you don’t find your pet at a particular shelter, ask to leave a lost pet report and current photo with the staff and be sure to check back daily and don't give up, keep looking.
- It's necessary for you to personally look for your pet, because the description you give over the phone may not be the same as another person would provide for that animal. (For Example: you might refer to your pet as a Shepherd Mix while someone else might recognize it as a Labrador Mix) The recommendation will be that you visit the shelter in person to look for your animal and fill out a missing animal report. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter keeps the missing animal reports for 60 days. A staff member will escort you through the building in our stray holding areas to look for your pet.
- A current color photo is one of the most beneficial tools to help locate your missing pet. Please bring a color photo of your missing pet with you to the shelter that can be left and used for identifying your missing companion.
- Animal Control and private citizens bring stray animals to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter each day, so by visiting every 2-3 days, you'll increase the chances of finding your pet if it was brought to us.
- If you have registered your pet by ID Tag or Microchip, contact the registering agency and alert them that your pet is missing? Be sure that the company has your current contact information up to date. If you don't know your pet's microchip number (your veterinarian may have it on file) you may also look up your pet's microchip record here: http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org . However, do not assume that just because your pet has a microchip that you'll be reunited. Still look at your local animal shelters.
- Contact veterinary practices, groomers and pet supply stores in your area. They may have a "Lost & Found" bulletin board in their business.
- POST FLYERS in your neighborhood and/or the area where you lost your pet, as well as nearby high traffic locations like schools, drug stores, gas stations, local gyms, and grocery store. Facebook also has "Lost & Found Animal" pages where you can post your missing pets information. Remember to include a recent photo of your pet and a cell phone number so you can be reached immediately, especially when your out searching for your pet. Check back in the area where your pet went missing as well as near your home. When it's quiet and early in the morning is the best time to look for your pet. During the day there is a lot of noise and distractions and your pet may not come out of hiding.
- Often times cats are not faraway from home and found in small crawl spaces, under the shed, in neighbors garages. Anywhere they can squeeze and hideout for few days.
