Permitting Services

Getting Started

Determine what type of project you are doing. If you are building or remodeling in unincorporated Rockingham County, you're in the right place. Otherwise, you'll start the permitting process with your city or town.

*If your project or task involves food, air quality, or other environmental factors, you may need additional permits from the Rockingham County Environmental Health Department.

Find and select the type of permit or license you need:

If you don't see the permit you're looking for, contact Central Permitting at [email protected].

Step 1

  • Know what type of permit application you need to complete.
  • Make sure you have your site plans.
  • Know what other required documents you’ll need to provide.
  • Have your contact information, owner & property information handy.
  • Make sure your documents meet all requirements.
  • Know your project’s upfront fees (if any).

Step 2

  • Fill out the application completely.
  • Gather required documents.

Step 3

  • Submit the application to the appropriate department.
  • Note that some permits require board/committee approval, so be sure to account for the processing time.
