JULY 8, 2019 Temporary Political Signs
North Carolina General Statutes define a "political sign" as any sign that advocates for political action and is not a commercial sign (NCGS 136-32).
Temporary Political Signs may be placed in Rockingham County and the Town of Wentworth according to the following general rules:
- Political yard signs are allowed in all zoning districts
- There is no limit to the number of signs that may be placed on a parcel of land
- Political yard signs may not be illuminated or emit light ? Political yard signs may not contain any moving parts
- No political yard sign may contain a commercial/advertising message
- Political yard signs may not be placed on a vacant lot without the owner's permission
- Political yard signs may not be placed within any right-of-way except as provided for by NCGS 136-32(b-e) Regulation of Signs:
"During the period beginning on the 30th day before the beginning date of 'one-stop' early voting under G.S. 163A-1300 and ending on the 10th day after the primary or election day, persons may place political signs in the right-of-way of the State highway system..." with the following conditions:
- Permission must be obtained from the owner of a residence, business or religious institution fronting the right-of-way where a sign would be erected.
- No sign shall be permitted in the right-of-way of a fully controlled access highway.
- No sign shall be placed closer than three feet from the edge of the pavement of the road.
- No sign shall obscure motorist visibility at an intersections
- No sign shall be higher than 42 inches above the edge of the pavement of the road.
- No sign shall be larger than 864 square inches
- No sign shall obscure or replace another sign
It is a Class 3 misdemeanor for a person to steal, deface, vandalize, or unlawfully remove a political sign that is lawfully placed under this section.
